Reading Between the Ship’s Ribs: Introducing Interco(a)stal

What happens when we look beyond the familiar stories of Maine’s maritime past? Whose histories have been left out of the picture, and how might we bring them back into public view? Join Atlantic Black Box and Interco(a)stal project partners for a conversation about a collaborative effort bringing together researchers, artists, Wabanaki knowledge keepers, museums, and community organizations to explore the histories embedded in Bath’s maritime landscape.

One week ahead of The Interco(a)stal Walk on October 18, project leaders Adilah Muhammad (The Third Place), James Eric Francis, Sr. (Penobscot Nation), Andrea Francis (Bomazeen Land Trust), and Meadow Dibble (Atlantic Black Box) will share the project’s origins, creative collaborations, and evolving vision for reimagining the Wyoming Evocation, a monument to Maine’s shipbuilding and seafaring heritage at Maine Maritime Museum. Together, they’ll explore how research, art, and community participation can challenge incomplete historical narratives, recenter Black and Wabanaki histories, and open new possibilities for participatory public memory.
