Why We Care:

In Maine, our jobs, our health, our leisure activities, our community values, and our identity as Maine people all have their roots in our beautiful environment.

Protecting our natural heritage in Maine has many advantages. It helps our economy by conserving the backbone of our natural resource based industries; it improves our communities by minimizing sprawl and making Maine a more desirable place to live. Our environment benefits by a countering against the impacts of fragmentation and loss of wildlife habitat, and Maine people get to experience greater public access to Maine’s outdoors and by protecting our heritage.

Land conservation through easements is one way to protect our natual forestlands, farms, shorelines, and waterways, and the Land for Maine's Future program (LMF) is one of the State of Maine’s most successful programs. Voters have overwhelmingly passed bonds to fund the purchase of land and easements through LMF in 1987, 1999, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2012.
